TONE KUMMERVOLD

Biography

Tone Kummervold is a distinguished Norwegian mezzo-soprano recognized for her contributions to both classical and contemporary operatic repertoires. She commenced her musical education at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) in Trondheim and subsequently pursued further studies at the University of Stavanger (UiS) where she was mentored by the highly esteemed soprano Elizabeth Norberg-Schulz. Kummervold honed her skills at the Conservatorio L. Refice in Italy, where she graduated with honors after studying with the noted Rossini specialist Agata Bienkowska.

Her talent also earned her a scholarship from the University of Stavanger as the best student in her class.

 

Kummervold made her professional debut at the Norwegian National Opera in 2009, portraying the role of the 3rd Dryad in Antonín Dvořák's Rusalka. This was followed by her performance as Olga in Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin in 2010 which further showcased her burgeoning talent. From 2011 to 2012, she participated in the opera studio and became a member of the Norwegian National Opera’s soloist ensemble for the 2012/2013 season.

 

Throughout her career, Kummervold has demonstrated remarkable versatility, performing leading roles in various classical and contemporary operas including the title roles in Carmen and La Cenerentola, as well as notable characters such as Ulrica in Verdi’s Un Ballo in Maschera, Mére Marie in Dialogues des Carmélites, Le Pélerin in Kaija Saariaho’s L’amour de loin, The Old Lady in Candide and Baba the Turk in Stravinsky's The Rake’s Progress. Her performance as Angela in the world premiere of Missy Mazzoli's The Listeners in 2022 received significant acclaim, and her rendition of Verdi's Requiem with the Oslo Philharmonic in 2023 further established her reputation as a leading mezzo.

 

In recent years, Kummervold has attained international recognition. She made her debut in Paris in 2021, performing Beethoven's 9th Symphony with Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France. In 2022, she captivated the audience at the Prague State Opera as La Morte in Erwin Schulhoff's Flammen. Additionally, Kummervold has toured with the Sønderjylland Symphony Orchestra in Händel’s Messiah and has performed with the Odense Symphony Orchestra in Denmark.

 

With her dedication to the future of the operatic art form and a diverse array of performances, Tone Kummervold continues to make significant contributions to the world of opera and classical music.
